NIGERIA. Near Ikot Expene. October 13, 1968. Federal Nigerian troops walk along a road to the frontier with Biafra, a few miles away. On the roadside, two emaciated Nigerian boys slowly die from starvation and malnutrition. Biafra was a breakaway state within Nigeria that fought a war for independence from 1967 to 1970, ending after years of fighting and a crippling blockade by Nigeria resulted in the deaths of between 500,000 and two million Biafran civilians by starvation.
